Angela Needham RIP

26 March 2018

PHOTO: Angela Needham was a member of the Green party since it started in the 1970s.

It was my sad duty earlier this year to relate the passing of Angela Needham.

I was privileged to know her for the few years she made her home in Hull, and to visit Angela a few times over her illness.

Angela had a heart attack late last year and was being cared for at Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham.

She died peacefully on December 8th.

All her life, Angela was an active campaigner for a better world, whether that was with the Greenham Women way back in the 1980s, or in more recent years campaigning against fracking at Walkington, or her committed work with Hull Friends of the Earth.

Angela was a regular Green Party candidate in local and general elections in the city, and when not doing things like that, could be found on a ship in the North Sea as part of a marine birdlife survey!

A life lived to the full and in a valuable way.

She will be sadly missed.

So good at bringing peace to others, may she rest in peace herself.

Angela writes here in her own words, to give you a flavour of what she stood for.

“I have worked on a variety of issue based campaigns, including gay and women's rights, and nuclear disarmament.

With Hull Friends of the Earth, I am involved in the development of a clean air zone in Hull's old town.

I encourag people to learn self sufficiency and to eat more healthily. I am a vegetarian.

Green social policies concern the rights of all people to a decent income, a good home and food, appropriate work, and access to healthy recreation.

However none of this is any good if we let climate change destroy our world.

We have a duty to the survival of our only planet home. So at the moment it is crucial that our greatest energy go into that which will enable true sustainability. To this end we must achieve renewable energy, recyclable products, end waste, eliminate pollution and achieve a carbon neutral state of living.”
