Hull to cost most-disabled £27 a week extra

Starting in June, Hull City Council will enforce a PIP/DLA cut which will affect many severely disabled people - and almost no-one knows it's coming.

"Some of our most vulnerable people are going to be paying more - a massive £27 every week - for the same care package," comments Martin Deane, of Hull Green Party.

"This applies to those who have the severest needs - as it only applies to the highest rates of PIP/DLA.

The changeover from DLA to PIP also means that the so-called 'Fairer Charging' income assessment is changing too, whereby an initial amount for care is paid by the disabled person themselves.

"To be fair, Hull City Council has protected residents until this year, whereas many other councils have been charging for years.

But it's also true that other councils aren't charging it still. And we believe neither should Hull."

The changes mean the Council will be legally able to take up to a further £27 a week towards a care package.

NOTES

  • £27 is a significant amount of money per week for the most vulnerable
  • the most disabled are the ones affected as they are on the highest rates of PIP/DLA.
  • the charge can't be avoided as it is in the money that pays for the first part of the budget. The council funds everything above.
  • Many of the people paying this, even if they live to 70, would never meet the £35,000 Dilnot care cap previously proposed.
