Ethical change

11 August 2015

There are things we can do, practically, to challenge the increasingly unfair and unsustainable society we live in. Here are ideas about changing your energy supplier, or how you could become part of an energy generating democracy! Ideas for changing your bank, insulating your home, considering a water meter.

These have two effects: one, we stop supporting the main economic oppressors, the high street banks and their never-ending bailouts, and the energy companies and their 10% fuel-poverty-ignoring price hikes they demand each year. Two, we show our commitment to different values by our actions and by supporting companies which are already committed. And we can even save money!

1. Get a green energy supplier

The Big 6 Energy companies put their prices up by about 10% a year. Unfortunately, we can’t raise our incomes by 10%, so we end up paying more.

The Green Party wants to see an end to fuel poverty - and to emphasise renewables (especially where we can get energy for free – as below)

Two greener energy companies we’re fond of are Ecotricity  (08000 302 302) and Good Energy (0800 254 0004).

They’re easy to switch to and often compare well.

Why not give them a go?

2. Retrofit your home

You can take energy a step further.

One home in Hull which used to cost £1500 in energy a year, now MAKES £1400!

You can learn how Green Party’s Richard Howarth retrofitted his home.

You may not go the whole hog: floor insulation, interior and exterior wall insulation, PV solar, passive solar water heating, etc. - but you may pick up a few tips!

Not everyone has £5000+ to invest in solar panels for their roof - but some companies carry out installations for FREE.

A Shade Greener has completed nearly 57,000 FREE solar installations.

Try their website to see if your home is suitable for their 100% free service (before government abolishes the FIT altogether!)

Yorkshire Water – could a meter be right for you?

For many households, especially single persons, a water meter can be a lot cheaper.
