Area Greens welcome Greek referendum

6 July 2015

Hull and East Riding Green Party hails Sunday’s referendum in Greece as a decisive vote against austerity.

"Greece's vote gives some hope to Hull. We need communities all over Europe now rejecting austerity and looking for alternatives."

Martin Deane, chair of Hull and East Riding Green Party, says the eurozone must now accept that Greece needs debt relief:

“The Greek people have made a decision which must now be respected. This referendum has seen EU states do their very best to undermine the democratic will of the Greek people but it’s time to draw a line and move forward.

“History shows us that countries can escape crippling debt in a just way.

"In 1953, at the London Conference, Greece was one of the nations that signed a deal allowing the cancellation of German debt, to enable the country to grow again after the destruction of the Second World War. Europe needs to come together now to offer the Greeks a deal which allows their country to be rebuilt.

”This is a pivotal moment for the EU to lead the way in saying that citizens and states are actually important enough that debt can be rescheduled.

“With what those same states have given to the banks in recent years, that is far from unreasonable!”
