Allam turf move insults local community, say Greens

Martin Deane, comments:

"We are dismayed that Assem and Ehab Allam - the owners of Hull City AFC - are conducting  the laying of artificial turf in Airco Arena without consulting the Council and after making extraordinary demands of them.

"It’s not the Council’s job to instantly rubber stamp the demands of industry. Each application has to be considered on its own merit. Here a football club owner has demanded a guarantee that a new dome pitch be automatically granted planning consent, which is unlawful, and that the Council pay £425,000 of the £850,000 cost.

"By turfing the Airco Arena, the owners of Hull City AFC are presenting everyone with a fait accompli.

"With no consultation, and scant warning, they are making homeless a number of sporting organisations that regularly used Airco Arena.

"This underhand move certainly vindicates the Council's decision not to give the Allams the freehold of the stadium.

"We are pleased to hear that Hull City Council is considering all its options."
