Statement on a proposed Tax Dodging Bill

20 February 2015

If elected we would strongly pursue a Tax Dodging Bill within 100 days.

An estimated £120 billion a year is lost to the Treasury by tax evasion and avoidance by big corporations and by the wealthy. The vast majority of this is legal - because the laws have been changed! The Green Party seeks to change those laws back – and more.

In this commitment, in this electoral area, we stand alone:

Proper taxation, clamping down on tax havens, using country-by-country reporting, are key to seeing off austerity, and re-energising the jobs market with hundreds of thousands of new jobs, especially in Green energy, savings and production, to create an eco-friendly country and future. These would be Living Wage jobs too, as we want to see an end to the wage slavery of workfare and in-work benefits.

Taxation must be used to rid ourselves of society’s ills not to line the pockets of the rich! We desperately need to see an end to the exploding use of foodbanks, to the repossession of people’s houses, and the hounding of those with disability through regressive measures like the Bedroom Tax, rules on changing from DLA to PIP, and so much more.

Instead, we are promised austerity upon austerity, with the prospect of hundreds of more good jobs to be lost locally - and replaced with what?

So we pledge to pursue a bill against the tax dodgers and to take major strides forward to making Britain a much fairer and more civilised country to live in than we are currently experiencing.

The Green Party candidates.
