Public ownership for Yorkshire Water

Should Yorkshire Water be taken back into public ownership? The Green Party thinks so.

Graphic reads:
Four ways to save water!
Turn the tap off while you're brushing your teeth.
Use a watering can to water plants instead of a hose.
Invest in leaking infrastructure instead of paying big bonuses to owners.
Bring water companies back into public ownership.
The Green Party logo is at the bottom of the graphic, on a watery background, with the imprint and the slogan Real Hope, Real Change.

At the recent (23 July) meeting of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the Green Party’s two new councillors, Tim Norman and Andy Walker, raised an amendment to a motion to call for Yorkshire Water to brought back into public ownership.

Councillor Norman said in the debate:

“Even in the middle of summer, Yorkshire Water storm overflows activated and sent wastewater into the seas and rivers around Bridlington. This exceptionally poor performance cannot continue.”

He added:

“This failing company should be publicly owned and properly accountable.”

Over 60% of the British people want water services to be nationalised but East Riding councillors are totally out of step with public opinion – only the two Green councillors supported the amendment for Yorkshire Water to be taken into public ownership.

Councillor Walker further added:

“What an awful outcome for residents and what a let-off for Yorkshire Water.”
